Getting to Malta

Sitting at the heart of the Mediterranean, Malta is one of Europe’s most accessible island destinations, with direct flights arriving from cities across the continent.

However you’re travelling, getting to the island is the easy part.

What happens when you arrive? That’s the unforgettable bit.

✈️ Fly Direct to Malta

Malta International Airport is one of the most connected airports in the Mediterranean, welcoming direct flights from across Europe, North Africa, and the Middle East year-round. Most major European cities have a direct route, and if yours doesn’t, you’re rarely more than one short connection away.

The main airlines flying into Malta include:
KM Malta Air, Ryanair, Malta Air, easyJet, Wizz Air, Lufthansa, KLM, Turkish Airlines, and several other regional carriers – meaning competitive prices and plenty of options no matter where you’re coming from.

🚕 Getting from the Airport

Malta International Airport is located in Luqa, just a few kilometres from the capital Valletta and within easy reach of the whole island.

By Taxi Official white taxis operate from the arrivals hall with fixed-rate fares to all destinations across Malta. No negotiating, no surprises.

Uber & Bolt are available on the Island, so make sure you have the apps ready downloaded on your devices to use

By Bus Malta’s public bus network connects the airport to Valletta and beyond. It’s affordable, runs regularly, and covers most of the island. Check schedules at publictransport.com.mt.

By Rental Car All major car rental companies operate from the airport. Malta drives on the left – keep that in mind before you hit the road. The island is small, so you’ll never be far from where you need to be.

🚢 Coming by Sea

Malta has a long history with the sea, and arriving by ferry is one of the most dramatic ways to do it.

From Sicily (Italy) Regular ferry and catamaran services run between Valletta’s Grand Harbour and Pozzallo or Catania in Sicily. The crossing takes between 1.5 and 3 hours depending on the route and service. Check schedules at virtuferries.com.

By Cruise Malta is a major Mediterranean cruise destination. Valletta’s Grand Harbour is one of the most iconic arrival points in Europe – if you happen to be cruising, you’ll know it when you see it.

🗺️ Getting Around Malta

Once you’re on the island, getting around is easy.

  • By Bus – affordable and reliable, covering the whole island
  • By Taxi or Rideshare – Uber, Bolt and eCabs operate across Malta
  • By Rental Car – great for flexibility; yet keep in mind that they drive on the left side of the road.

The island is only 27 km long, so nothing is ever truly far away.
